KEYNOTE speakers
The organising committee is delighted to present our keynote speakers:
Nils-Claudius Gellrich, MD, DMD
Chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany
Starting in 1982, Nils-Claudius Gellrich studied both dentistry and medicine at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany, with study periods in Bangor (North Wales/Great Britain, 2 months), Montgomery and Birmingham (Alabama/USA, 4 months) and Zurich (Switzerland, 4 months). After acquiring his license as D.M.D. in 1987 and as M.D. in 1989, he started his specialist training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, in 1990. He obtained his board certification for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in January 1994 and the qualification in Regional Plastic Surgery in 1996. In 1997 he became the deputy of the chairman at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, rising to the position as Associate Professor in 2001. He is holding a chairman position at Hannover Medical School, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, in Hannover, Germany, since October 2004.
In the course of his career Prof. Gellrich was always very active in research. His major research interests focus on tissue engineering, traumatic optic nerve lesion, neuroprotection, computer-assisted planning using virtual models in craniofacial surgery and intraoperative navigation using non-invasive registration for reconstructive surgery. He was given several grants, mainly by the German National Research Foundation, for research in these fields. His work was already rewarded with several awards, for example the Hans-Pichler-Award of the Austrian Association for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2000, the German Skull Base Society Poster Award in 2003 and the award of the DÖSAK (German-Austrian-Swiss Working Group of Head and Neck Tumors) in 2004.
Prof. Gellrich is an experienced lecturer and teacher. Apart from giving lectures for dental and medical students, he is a skilled instructor in oral and maxillofacial surgery, first at Bochum and Freiburg, now at Hannover Medical School, Germany. He has been invited speaker at numerous scientific meetings and conferences and faculty member and chairman at multiple national and international workshops and courses, especially on osteosynthesis, reconstructive craniofacial surgery, microvascular reconstruction and dental implantology.
Professor Robert Andrew Ord, DDS, MD, FDS, RCPS, FRCS, FACS, MS.
Professor Robert Andrew Ord, DDS, MD, FDS, RCPS, FRCS, FACS, MS. qualified in Dentistry at the University of London in 1970 and in Medicine (with honours) at University Hospital of Wales in 1977.He completed his surgical training in the United Kingdom (Eastman, Canniesbum, East Grinstead, Kings) in 1985 and was appointed a Consultant to the Northern Regional Health Authority in 1985.In 1989 he was appointed to the Faculty of the University of Maryland, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is currently Professor and Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Maryland Medical Systems, Chief of the Maxillofacial Oncology Division University of Maryland, Chief of Head and Neck Surgery (Dept. Otolaryngology) at Maryland General Hospital and Professor of the Oncology team at the Greenebaum Cancer Center, Baltimore. He gained his M.S. in Oral Pathology at the University of Maryland 1995.Professor Ord is currently president of the Maryland Society of OMS, and an examiner for the American Board of OMS.
Professor Ord’s interests in oral cancer are in the fields of clinical surgery, teaching and research. The Maxillofacial Oncology service at the University of Maryland currently sees 200 new cases a year of which approximately 110 are new oral cancers. This volume of patients is treated within a multi-disciplinary team, allowing the establishment of new protocols and clinical trials to explore revolutionary, therapeutic modalities, in combination with basic molecular biologic research.Professor Ord’s research interests have therefore been mainly in the fields of clinical trials and translational research. In the last 5 years results of clinical trials on chemoprevention (with Altransretonoic acide, and Fenretinide), gene therapy (p53 adenovirus) and multi-modality (chemo/radiation) protocols have been published by our head and neck team. Our current interest in translation research lies in the field of molecular targeting and radiation sensitization.Professor Ord is Director of the Maxillofacial Oncology Fellowship:a two year training position for young surgeons, which is one of only three accredited Maxillofacial Oncology Fellowships in the U.S.A.
Professor Ord is on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pan-American Journal of Trauma. He has published approximately 100 scholarly works, including co-editing a book on Oral Cancer, 20 book chapters and 60 scientific papers in the field on oncology.
